At 16, Micah Roberts is doing more activities than many teenagers his age. A day usually consists of waking up for early morning band practice, going to school, yearbook club, and then after-school band or showchoir practice in his hometown of Lawton, Okla.

“I enjoy being involved and meeting new people,” Roberts said.

He has been playing the French horn for five years.

“I used to play the trumpet, but I hated it,” he said.

Roberts is the first chair in the MacArthur High School Band.

“I love music,” he said.

“All the friendships I’ve made have been through band, and it has taught me the responsibility I need to become a great leader,” he said. “I would say I’m pretty musically inclined.”

Roberts is in a college preparatory program called Upward Bound.

“We have class on Saturday,” he said. “But in the summer, we stay in the dorms at Cameron University for a week in July.”

He takes math, science, English, technology and foreign language classes at Upward Bound. “I was so happy when I found out I got in I started dancing all around,” Roberts said.

Yearbook design helped Roberts realize he wanted to try journalism. Roberts’ OIDJ program experience has him considering journalism as his college major.

“I want to either major in journalism or music,” Roberts said.  “I know those are two totally different majors. But those are my two favorite things to do.”

He is considering attending The University of Oklahoma or Oklahoma State University.
