Morgan Ashcraft is a unique girl, someone who prides herself on standing out from the crowd. With her complex and multi-layered nature, she’s absolutely one-of-a-kind.
Unlike many teenagers her age, Ashcraft is interested in foreign affairs, particularly the Middle East. She is fascinated to learn about people’s stories and the problems in that area compared with Oklahoma.
Ashcraft is unique in that she is open-minded on religion. While she is not particularly religious, she said she never says no to the possibility of something existing beyond earthly matters. Some people have a fairly set-in-stone belief system about what comes after death. Ashcraft does not have that. She doesn’t know what happens after death, and she is OK with that.
Ashcraft also is a somewhat unusual journalist. It’s a journalist’s job to find stories everywhere and do whatever it takes to uncover the information that is necessary to create an amazing story. In many journalists’ cases, they are also just naturally curious. However, in Ashcraft’s case, the latter statement isn’t entirely true. While she doesn’t have a natural curiosity, she does believe that it can be nurtured. One way for her to do that is to do the research.
Her unusual practice in journalism is her story information gathering tactics. She doesn’t like to interfere, so she prefers to befriend her interview subjects to gain their trust. In her opinion, a journalist should be convincing, not sneaky.
Ashcraft’s family also is unique. After her parents got divorced, her mother later remarried the father of Ashcraft’s best friend, Beca. They had been such close friends that they called themselves cousins, but then found themselves in the unique situation of actually being family. Along with her new stepsister, her stepfather also has anther child. Ashcraft’s stepmother has two children as well. She also has a half-sister, Meagan, on her father’s side.
Ashcraft and Beca worked to improve their relationship through the challenges that came with suddenly living together. Although it was tough on them to be together constantly at first, Ashcraft said they have learned to love each other and deal with each other, which has created an unbreakable bond.
As for unusual talents, Ashcraft can bend her pinky finger over completely backwards and pop it, and twist her elbow in a really strange way. These are both things she discovered she was able to do after breaking her arm in the first grade. Since the break occurred at the elbow, Ashcraft’s parents were told that if she left the cast on for the usual recommended amount of time, then she wouldn’t be able to fully extend her arm ever again. Her parents decided to have the doctor remove the cast a bit early, resulting in her unique talents.
