Tristan Breath strives to recreate the enjoyable feeling that resonates with viewers after they see films they love. Breath, a Norman North senior, wants to relate to the audience, not only in capturing universal thoughts and feelings, but also in the makeup of the cast.
“I would love to shine a light on the lack of diversity that’s still in Hollywood,” she says. “A lot of black women and people in the LGBT community really are overlooked often in film and TV shows … I think that would be really awesome to be able to showcase their talents.”
She talks extensively about being a black woman pursuing the industry and how she hopes to change current dynamics surrounding the representation of minorities.
“I think there needs to be more specific roles dedicated to minorities so opportunities can happen,” she says.
Breath credits a media class at school for sparking an interest in video journalism, which has set in motion a pursuit in videography. She hopes to move to Los Angeles for college at the University of Southern California.
She admires black women who have thrived in Hollywood, including Oprah Winfrey. Breath’s goal of creating inclusivity gives her interest in pop culture more meaning, while her background allows her to have an empathic position.
She ultimately wants to exemplify the message that to fulfill all aspects of entertainment, there must be inclusive depictions of characters.
She said both her race and her gender are sometimes seen as obstacles, but they push her to wanting to succeed.
